I wanted to give this version 3 stars because of the remastering. But, I couldn't bring myself to slap 3 stars on any version of Holy Diver. Holy Diver is worthy of more stars than I am able to award it here. I own the original cd release, a Japanese remastered version and the deluxe releases from a few years ago. Then there is the Rock Candy release of this all time classic from Someone named Gary Moore not the guitar player remastered this version for Rock Candy Records and it sounds pitiful.
I've listened to it several times and it sounds like it was taped from a record player. I will say that I am usually more than happy with the sound of the remastered cd's that Rock Candy produces. But, sometimes they miss the mark and in this case, they did so while being entrusted with an all time great. Steer clear of this version. The Japanese remasters have the best sound but are expensive and difficult to find. The deluxe versions are outstanding and have all kinds of extras. The booklet in the Rock Candy version is great and there's a rare interview with Ronnie at the end.
But, the sound is unbearable. The first being Rainbow Rising. The second being Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell. The Decade of Dio remasters from are superior to any other remasters, including Japanese remasters and this Andy Pearce Deluxe remaster.
This Andy Pearce remastered CD sounds smoothed i. A lot of the reviews I've read here concern the sound quality,as a collecter of s era live recordings there's nothing wrong with this offering from Ronnie James Dio,his voice does show some wear and tear but it's also 30 years later,I saw him back in the day and this set is a nice souvenir from that era,Enjoy!!!!
Every decade they say that its the last generation for metal. It never is, it never will be. As I write this review, Im listening to the intro of Holy Diver. It still gets me like it did the first time I ever heard it. Holy Diver, is one of the best metal albums to ever be created. Im going to review each and every song, in depth. But let me start by saying that this is one of the greatest albums, cover to cover, to ever be released and is slightly underated.
P Ronnie James Dio. Track 1: Stand up and shout- Good opening song. Pretty fast faced, hard hitting song. Its mainly about self expression and letting yourself be heard, you just have to try. A good motivational song, and the sound gets your blood flowing. Really powerful sound, pretty good song. Track 2: Holy diver- The title track. One of the greatest song's I have ever heard.
Hands down, this is a metal masterpiece. A haunting intro, a great riff, and killer vocals, this song does what many metal songs have tried and failed to do. You can listen to this song times and still feel the same as you did when you first heard it- in awe. Track 3: Gypsy- Not my favorite off of this album, but still a pretty good song. Strong vocals here. Even though its not my favorite, its still a decent song. Track 4: Caught in the middle- Really catchy riff, verses and chorus. I really like this song. A little smoother on the vocals here, still a great song.
Track 5: Dont talk to strangers- Starts off very soft, smooth, and beautiful sound. It makes you think its going to be a ballad, but quickly kicks into high gear. It slows down again later in the song.
Even though at parts its fast paced, this is a fairly slow song, and a really great track. Track 6: Straight through the heart- Killer drum beat at the very start of the song, really good riff. For a time, this was my favorite Dio song.
